First Time Playboy was at ELA

Porn Valley- You might think that Playboy and an annual Los Angeles adult entertainment trade show would go hand in hand.

But this coming weekend is in fact the first time that Hef’s empire has participated in Erotica Los Angeles (ELA), a nine-year-old event taking place from June 10th through the 12th at the Los Angeles Convention Centre. This, as much as anything, is a reminder that those much maligned soft core hotel pay movies and other such filmed entertainment is what pays for Hef’s Viagra prescriptions, not the money-losing magazine.

Lately, the folks at Playboy Video have been having some fun by expanding their “Women of …” series to Starbucks, Fear Factor and now, most comically, McDonald’s (‘Would you like sighs with that?’). At the show, they will be unveiling their own latest capitalization on the reality craze – Sexiest Amateur Home Videos – as well as broadcast the radio show “Night Calls” on XM Satellite live from ELA.

Meanwhile, other less well-known dens of inequity are getting involved with ELA. The Erotic Museum in Hollywood, located a little further east of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre along Hollywood Boulevard, will have a 3500 square foot trade floor exhibit space that, according to a press release, will include the following attractions:

– Daily rope bondage performances by Twisted Monk;

– Informative lectures and product demonstrations given by representatives from Dominion, Los Angeles’s premiere BDSM club;

– A lesson on the ins-and-outs of safe play with Stockroom blogger Lucky Lana through her Bondage Safety Course.

The funny thing is that the overlap between the subject matter expertise are of bondage and your average top Hollywood power broker is probably much greater than you might think. Meanwhile, across the street from the museum’s Tinseltown touchpad, the American Cinematheque will be marking the ELA trade show with a post-event screening series from June 15th through the 19th entitled “Hot, Hot Summer Nights”. It’s got everything from Paul Morrissey’s Flesh to Showgirls to an obscure Japanese cult flick.
