Chicago- Emmis Communications Corporation has announced that the company has entered into a consent decree with the Federal Communications Commission to settle all outstanding indecency-related matters related to Mancow Muller’s radio program on WKQX-FM, Chicago.
The F.C.C. says this agreement resolves investigations into whether Emmis stations had broadcast obscene, indecent, or profane material in violation of the Communications Act and Commission rules. As part of the agreement, Emmis admits that some of the material it broadcast was indecent, in violation of U.S. law.
Terms of the agreement call for Emmis to make a voluntary contribution of $300,000 to the U.S. Treasury, with the FCC terminating all current indecency-related inquiries and fines against Emmis.
“Earlier this year we adopted an aggressive policy to ensure that Emmis provides quality, compelling, on-air content that conforms to decency standards,” says Emmis President and CEO Jeff Smulyan.
“We announced a zero tolerance policy and are taking extraordinary steps to educate our on-air employees and program directors. The consent decree settles all pending indecency-related issues, and allows us to move forward.” Emmis Communications is operates radio stations in some of the nation’s largest markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Phoenix, St. Louis, Indianapolis and Terre Haute, Indiana.
