WAUWATOSA, Wisconson – A man is under arrest after trying to take pictures of a woman, Tara Cole, who was using the bathroom at Mayfair Mall. Wauwatosa police say it happened mid-afternoon Thursday near the food court at Mayfair.

“I was enraged, embarrassed, and ashamed, that I can go into a women’s bathroom in a public place like a mall in the middle of the afternoon and here’s some pervert in the stall next to me,” Cole told reporters.

Cole said she was using the bathroom near the food court when she saw the man’s head peek out from under the stall partition. Moments later, he tried to use a cell phone camera to take her photo.

Cole’s picture was never found on the cell phone, but pictures of several other women were. She confronted the man and he claimed he accidentally went into the wrong bathroom. Cole’s husband physically restrained the suspect until security arrived.

Mayfair Mall staff said security guards aren’t allowed in the bathrooms, so it is impossible to prevent something like this from happening. They said security was on the scene within a minute.

“The fact that we can get there really quickly and take control of the situation, that’s really our biggest focus at this point,” Mayfair general manager Stephen Smith said.

Cole said she will never go back to Mayfair, and is very nervous to use a public bathroom again.

The suspect is a 34-year-old Milwaukee man. A lieutenant with the Butler Police Department confirmed that the man had been arrested for a similar incident at a restroom in the Butler Inn in February of 2005.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that he has also been arrested in Wauwatosa and Menomonee Falls for similar incidents.
