LOS ANGELES – Don’t mess with Cameron Diaz – she’s on a winning streak.
The “Charlie’s Angels” star won an undisclosed settlement yesterday and an apology from a British newspaper that ran a story accusing her of messing with a married man.
The 32-year-old actress’ victory in a London court came just four days after an L.A. jury convicted a photographer of trying to blackmail her with topless photos she posed for before she hit the big time.
A bogus story published in London’s Sun two months ago claimed Diaz – whose steady boyfriend is 24-year-old singer Justin Timberlake – was romantically involved with married MTV producer Shane Nickerson, who works on her show “Trippin’.”
With the headline “Riddle of Cameron’s 3-min snog with a pal … and it wasn’t Justin,” the story claimed Diaz was caught in the bushes with Nickerson in Santa Monica, Calif.
But the Sun wound up admitting the incident was “no more than Ms. Diaz giving a friend a goodbye hug and any suggestion of a romantic involvement is entirely untrue,” Diaz’s lawyer Simon Smith said. He would not disclose the amount of the settlement in the libel case.
Smith said the article hurt Diaz’s reputation and caused “distress” for her, Timberlake, Nickerson and his wife.
Diaz isn’t done with court dates.
Last month, she filed a $10 million libel suit against the National Enquirer stemming from a similar report about Diaz and Nickerson.
