Model’s Body Found; Led Double Life

Woodland Hills – An aspiring model whose decomposing remains were believed found in a storage facility led a double life that she hid from her new husband a life that included an affair with a millionaire almost 40 years her senior, a gold Mercedes-Benz and a house that she and her lover were buying.

A woman’s body, and a purse belonging to 21-year-old Iryna Singerman, were found Tuesday in the bed of a pickup truck owned by her lover, Brian Joseph Cullen, 59. The remains had not been positively identified late Wednesday, said Lt. Richard Hanna of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office.

Police are hunting for Cullen, who they believe fled to Mexico.

Iryna Singerman’s husband, Ronald Singerman, only learned of her secrets last week, when she failed to return home and some of her financial documents turned up along with a bloody baseball bat in garbage bags that were dumped in a bin behind a Woodland Hills strip mall.

“The family didn’t know anything about this,” said Barry Greenberg, the Singerman family’s spokesman. “(Ronald) had never heard of any of this until the case broke. He’s devastated.”

Iryna Singerman met her 50-year-old husband, who is a certified public accountant, a year ago through an agency that matches American men with Russian women, police said.

Cullen became a suspect in her disappearance because of surveillance camera images and a witness who reported seeing him toss bags into the strip mall dumpster on July 26. The next day, authorities found blood and other evidence of a struggle when they searched Cullen’s Woodland Hills home.

Police believe Singerman’s killing was a domestic violence incident.

Singerman spent most weekend’s at Cullen’s house, his neighbors said. The pair were buying another house together in Northridge, according to Los Angeles police Detective Rick Swanston.

Singerman also drove a gold 2005 Mercedes-Benz registered to both her and her husband and kept the car at Cullen’s home.

Ronald Singerman knew nothing about the car until insurance information arrived in the mail, Swanston said. His wife told him that her frequent absences from home were related to her modeling work, but Swanston said police were unaware of her holding any modeling jobs.

Neighbors and co-workers described Cullen as a physically fit, private man with a bit of a temper. He owns a coupon book business and is on parole for a federal wire fraud conviction in the 1980s.

From the LA Times: Human remains found inside a truck parked at a San Fernando Valley self-storage center are probably those of a missing part-time model www.adultfyi.com/read.aspx?ID=10873 who police suspect was killed by her lover, investigators said Wednesday.

Iryna Singerman, 21, was last seen by her husband on July 25, two days before Los Angeles Police Department officers were directed to a trash bin behind a Canoga Park business, where they found garbage bags containing a blood-streaked baseball bat, towels and documents bearing the name of the Ukrainian-born woman.

Last week, investigators searched the Woodland Hills home of Singerman’s boyfriend, 59-year-old Brian Joseph Cullen.

Investigators said there were signs of a struggle in the home, and they seized documents that led them to a Winnetka storage center where a woman’s decomposing body, her purse and other effects were found under a truck-bed cover.

Employees at the business told police that on July 26, a man identifying himself as Cullen paid them three months’ rent on a storage unit and said he was “going away for a long time,” said Det. Rick Swanston of the LAPD’s West Valley Division.

Investigators are exploring several possible motives for Singerman’s probable slaying, but Swanston said he believes this is “a domestic violence incident between two people. She’s dead, and he’s on the run.”

Singerman met her husband, Ronald, a certified public accountant, a year ago through an agency that matches American men with Russian women, Swanston said.

He brought her to the United States and the couple married, settling in Ronald Singerman’s West Los Angeles home.

Swanston said it was unclear when Singerman met Cullen, who owns a coupon book business and is on federal parole for a wire fraud conviction in the 1980s.

Cullen had been seeing Singerman for at least several months, police said. Singerman told her husband that her frequent absences were related to her modeling work.

Swanston described Singerman as an aspiring model with a portfolio.

She was not employed by a modeling agency.

Cullen, who also goes by the name Mark Corbett, may be traveling with a 14-year-old boy, whom he told friends he adopted last year in Mexico.

He was last known to be driving a gray Ford Focus with California license plate 5PBS947. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call homicide detectives at (818) 374-7721.
