FORT WORTH, Texas — A Fort Worth judge Thursday sentenced a Grapevine teacher for having sex with her 13-year-old student.

Judge Wayne Salvent followed the jury’s recommendation and sentenced former seventh-grade teacher Dawn Reiser, 30, to as many as eight years in prison and at least two years of probation.

Reiser was sentenced to 10 years of probation to be served concurrently with her prison term. If she serves the full eight years, she would serve two years of probation.

Reiser must also pay for any professional counseling the boy may receive.

Reiser, who taught at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Grapevine, Texas, had faced a maximum sentence of life plus 20 years in prison.

From the stand, the boy’s unidentified mother made a tearful statement.

“I resent the Catholic school system for hiring a predator like you to teach 13-year-old kids religion,” she said. “One thing I know you didn’t count on was the strong Christian faith that my son has.”

On Wednesday, after two days of testimony and five hours of deliberations, the jury found Reiser guilty on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and two counts of indecency with a child.

Testimony in the trial reveled multiple sexual encounters between Reiser and her former student, now 14, including bondage and explicit love letters.

Prosecutors in the case said the evidence clearly showed Reiser to be guilty, while defense attorneys argued the case was filled with reasonable doubt.

“That’s what this is. This was a child rape. This was an evil act,” prosecutor Mitch Poe said in comments to the jury.

“Nothing happened on that day,” defense attorney Sam Cammack said. “No sex act … nothing. Nothing happened on that day because if they did kiss on that day, that’s not a crime.”

Reiser showed no emotion while the verdict was read.
