(WAVELAND, MS) — “Don’t anyone dare knock the Marines for flying the American flag on the statue of Saddam Hussein!” says Vince Vance who’s album WE DON’T RUN features the hit single BOMB IRAQ. “We are giving American lives in this battle, and we have every right to fly that flag!”
The controversy arose when the Marines helped the people of Baghdad bring down a towering statue of Saddam Hussein. The event started with the Iraqi people throwing their shoes at the huge statue. The people then proceeded to pound upon it with a sledge hammer. They scaled the statue and put a rope around its neck. Futility, the crowd tugged and beat against the statue; but the statue stood. Then a Marines armored vehicle came to the scene. The crowd parted to let the vehicle to the statue. Iraqi people climbed aboard the Marine vehicle cheering, and waving their arms in celebration. The vehicle backed to the statue of Saddam Hussein and raised a crane.
Two Marines climbed the crane while mere blocks away, the battle from Baghdad continued. Snipers were still prevalent in the area. Oblivious of any personal danger, those Marines climbed to the top of the crane to the very face of Saddam Hussein. Over the face of Saddam Hussein, they placed the American flag. We have every right to do that; we were the concurring force and more important the marine made a statement to the entire world and specifically to terrorists that it’s a new area. We Don’t Run, and then true to the American ideals, the Marines lowered the American flag and replaced it with the traditional Iraqi National flag. The right for that flag to be placed over Saddam Hussein’s face was paid for with American lives. No one has the right to deny the Marines that moment! Minutes later, the gigantic statue of Saddam Hussein tumbled to the ground. The Iraqi people, rejoicing, tore it apart! The Marines put away their equipment and moved on… They had other work to do.
