HESPERIA, Ca – The 28-year-old lead singer of the band Virgin Mary Suicide was arrested on suspicion of lewd acts with a child after a woman reported that the singer had sex with her 14-year-old daughter, sheriff’s officials said.
Valentin Garcia, 28, of Hesperia was located and arrested Friday, 11 days after the victim’s mother reported the crime, Roxanne Walker, spokeswoman for the Hesperia sheriff’s station, said.
The victim, who just turned 14, said she was invited to Garcia’s home under false pretenses and he had sex with her while she was at the residence. Information from sheriff’s deputies did not indicate whether the intercourse was consensual.
Investigators reviewed information found on the Web site www.myspace.com/virginmarysuicide, where young females can contact the band through the Internet, Walker said.
On the Web site, a message appearing to come from the band to the fans was posted on the same day the investigation began, Aug. 23.
“Val has decided to take an absence from the band to focus on personal matters. We shall be on hiatus for a while, but we shall be back with a full length album … soon. Thanx for all your support … See you next year,” a post on the Web site said.
Garcia was booked into Victor Valley Jail with a bail amount of $50,000 on suspicion of lewd acts with a child and false pretenses, Walker said.
