CHICAGO — Andrea Kelly, wife of the R&B singer R. Kelly, has dropped an order of protection against him, and the couple will attempt to solve their problems outside of the courtroom, lawyers said Monday.
Andrea Kelly had been granted an order of protection earlier this month after she alleged that her estranged husband slapped her, according to court records.
The couple are working toward reconciliation, and no other court filings were planned, said R. Kelly’s lawyer, Nathan Swerdlove.
“They had a squabble–and how many marriages don’t have that sort of thing?” Swerdlove said Monday. “They’re trying to work things out, and they’d like to do it privately.”
R. Kelly has been spending some time with his three children during visits, Swerdlove said.
Donald Schiller, a lawyer for Andrea Kelly, confirmed that the order of protection was dismissed Thursday and that the couple have sought counsel with matrimonial attorneys.
R. Kelly, who has had Top 40 hits such as “I Believe I Can Fly,” is facing a 14-count child pornography indictment that alleges he had sex with a 14-year-old girl and videotaped the encounter at his Chicago apartment.
A hearing in that case is scheduled for Oct. 7 before Cook County Circuit Judge Vincent Gaughan.
