Chicago- A Roman Catholic priest visiting from Poland has been charged with raping a Glendale Heights woman whose family had allowed him to stay in their home, DuPage County authorities said Thursday.

The Rev. Tadeusz Ulman was charged with criminal sexual assault after he allegedly attacked the 24-year-old woman early Monday as she slept in a bedroom of the west suburban home where Ulman was staying.

Ulman, 45, is a Polish national who had been offered lodging by the family while he was in the area, officials said.

“He was invited into a home, and he took advantage of that,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Joseph Birkett said.

Bail for Ulman was set at $500,000, and he was ordered to surrender his passport. He remained in the DuPage County Jail late Thursday, authorities said.

Ulman previously had been staying at the Mount Carmel Monastery in Munster, Ind., authorities said.

An employee there said Thursday that Ulman had been “visiting” the monastery but was not assigned there.

Ulman was not in the Chicago area on any official church business, according to a spokesman for the Joliet Diocese.

“He was in town on his own,” spokesman John Cullen said.

Ulman arrived in the Chicago area last week and had been offered lodging by the Glendale Heights family, who knew him only slightly, Birkett said.

Ulman was taken into custody about 7 a.m. Monday after the woman reported the alleged attack.
