They’re starting a new HBO series about the rise of the porn industry in the 1970s. 

And Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco were channeling New York City’s gritty past as they filmed The Deuce in Manhattan on Friday.

The 38-year-old actress, who plays the part of an enterprising prostitute, definitely looked period-appropriate in a cream-colored, baggy spaghetti strap top with black accents and a dirty skirt with a rough hem.

James Franco, who is both acting in and producing the project, was also on hand, but looked like he was staying behind the camera for the day.
