NY- The photographer behind this year’s Oscar-winning documentary “Born Into Brothels” is accusing her publisher of botching a coffee-table book about the film intended to raise money for charity.

Zana Briski [pictured], who co-directed the film about the children of prostitutes living in Calcutta’s red-light district, is suing Umbrage Editions for $1.5 million, alleging it produced an “inferior” book to accompany the movie.

Briski claims Umbrage and publisher Nan Richardson, a former art curator, produced a book with poor images and paper quality, and then did little to market and distribute it or capitalize on the movie’s post-Oscar buzz.

Royalties from the book go to Briski’s nonprofit, Kids With Cameras, which teaches poor children to photograph their lives and helps them get an education.

“She’s not happy with the book, not happy with Umbrage, not happy with the marketing . . . and the charity is losing,” said Briski’s lawyer, Errol Margolin.

Umbrage and Richardson, who did not return messages seeking comment, were supposed to market the book, which first appeared in late 2004, to “dovetail with the film,” Margolin said. But “when the film came out, you couldn’t find the book,” he said.

Briski, who negotiated the book deal without a lawyer and put up $46,000 of the nonprofit’s money for its layout and design, wants Umbrage to give up rights to the book so she can publish a better version elsewhere.
