Orlando, Florida- The package on the checkers game said for ages 6 and up, but what Roberta Ann Finn’s young grandson found inside should only be seen by adults.
“I’m glad he couldn’t read,” Finn said Tuesday. “He’s starting to read — but not this.”
The “this” she referred to was a purple card featuring a picture of an adult-film star sitting in the nude.
The card was part of the packaging for a key chain that emits audio clips of porn star Jenna Jameson at work.
Luckily, Finn said, 6-year-old Matthew was more interested in playing checkers and set the card aside.
Finn said she and her husband, John, went back to the DeLand Winn-Dixie supermarket where they purchased the $1 game and inspected about five other sets. When they unwrapped another picture of the porn star, the couple went to management.
Employees immediately removed all the games from the shelves.
“When we were alerted that the Giant Checkers Game sold in several of our stores may contain inappropriate materials, we immediately took steps to pull all of the affected games off our store shelves and contacted the vendor,” Winn-Dixie officials wrote in a statement.
The set was imported by Promotions Unlimited Corp., which is described on its Web site as a an “independent, family-owned” company in Racine, Wis.
Officials with the company sent the Finns a letter dated April 10 apologizing for what they called an error by a factory in China that was trying to save on costs by using recycled cardboard. Workers there were wrapping the checkers sets’ tablecloth-like game boards around the cardboard to keep the sets in place inside their packaging.
The checkers game was ordered by 22 Winn-Dixies, said Scott Weaver, vice president of sales at Promotions Unlimited. Only 11 of the stores had the toy. He said the same card was found in a checkers set at a store in Texas.
Weaver said the factory has now been instructed to use only “clean” cardboard.
