Fresno- It was a violent beating caught on tape and posted on the internet for everyone to see. Now the Fresno Police Department is investigating it.
Fights are nothing new, but the one that broke out in this street is different. Not only was the fight taped, it’s now appearing on the popular website Myspace.com and there’s one thing about the tape that many are finding very disturbing.
The fight lasts close to seven minutes on tape, and clearly shows an all-out brawl in the middle of the street.
During the fight, an adult who witnesses have identified as the mother of one of the girls watches the entire event.
“I was in shock. I was in total shock and I could not believe the mother was there helping her daughter fight my daughter,” said mother Diane Thrower.
Thrower says she felt sick when she learned about the fight. She called police to file a report.
A police department commander tells Action News “I have viewed the video and was outraged by what I saw. I have immediately assigned the case to a detective. A full investigation is underway before we can determine charges for anyone involved.”
Even though the fight happened off campus, Fresno Unified officials are also investigating the incident. They say providing a safe passage to and from school is a priority. They believe this incident was unusual for several reasons.
“What’s disturbing is that, number one is that its being videotaped and broadcast in that manner, number two that adults are using or could be potentially using children as pawns in something of this nature,” said Pete Summers.
Thrower says she wishes the mother who observed the fight would have gone about things a different way and encouraged the girls to talk out their problems, since they were good friends.
“Why couldn’t we get together and talk to these girls? That’s the most upsetting. Kids are going to get into fights every once in a while, but for an adult, a parent, to be involved, what kind of parenting are you doing?” said Thrower.
Both girls have been suspended from school. The other girl in the video was contacted, and she declined to comment about the fight and said her mother was not home.
