Phoenix- The state has approved a new law restricting sexually oriented and adult businesses from locating near schools, playgrounds, residential areas and churches.
The measure bars strip clubs, adult bookstores and escort agencies from locating within a quarter mile of schools, parks, churches and residential neighborhoods.
The plan was signed into law by Gov. Janet Napolitano after passing the state Legislature. The measure had bipartisan support, including from the socially conservative Center for Arizona Policy, state Rep. Laura Knaperek, R-Tempe, and was signed into law by the Democratic governor this week.
Adult businesses and strip clubs are concern in central Phoenix and south Scottsdale, where mayors Phil Gordon and Mary Manross have been concerned lower-end establishments might hurt economic development efforts.
Gordon fought against a planned strip club in downtown Phoenix and pushed zoning changes to bar new adult businesses from opening in Copper Square. Manross has supported restrictions on lap dances and contact with customers at Scottsdale strip clubs.
