WWW- The latest Duke University lacrosse player accused of raping a stripper is the product of the rarefied air of Washington power and privilege.
Suspect David Evans is the son of Rae Evans, 50, a prominent lobbyist who boasts topnotch links to the Bush family, and David Evans, a partner at one of the capital’s most prominent law firms.
Evans’ preppie-looking parents stood stiffly behind him Monday as he forcefully rejected the explosive rape case that has ensnared the once top-ranked Duke lacrosse team.
David Evans, 23, grew up in the tony suburb of Bethesda, Md., and graduated from Duke a day before he was indicted.
He said the rape charges against himself and two teammates, Reade Seligmann, 21, of Essex Fells, N.J., and Collin Finnerty, 20, of Garden City, L.I., were based on “fantastic lies.”
Befitting lacrosse’s image as an elite sport, all three students come from classy suburbs and attended some of the best private schools.
Rae Evans is chairwoman of the board of the Ladies Professional Golf Association and was a regular tennis partner of Marilyn Quayle, the wife of former Vice President Dan Quayle.
She is “definitely superstitious,” and made her family carry lucky coins during the Duke lacrosse team’s NCAA tournament games, according to an interview with her on the golf association’s Web site.
Rae Evans is a prolific campaign donor, stuffing a whopping $31,420 into mostly Republican coffers since 1994 and campaigning for President Bush’s reelection in 2004 with the W Stands for Women committee.
Her firm, Evans Capitol Group, lobbies Congress and the White House on behalf of the Girl Scouts, the Newspaper Association of America, Nextel, American Business Media, Ticketmaster, the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross.
David Evans, 60, is a partner with the high-powered law firm Reed Smith.
