WWW- Some criminals behind bars make license plates.
But imprisoned pimp Jason Itzler makes movie deals – or at least is trying to.
The 37-year-old Itzler, who’s been at Rikers Island since the January 2005 bust of his Worth St. brothel and awaits trial on money-laundering and prostitution charges, just left me a voice-mail message from the hoosegow – his second in as many days.
Itzler told me: “Jeremy Piven is signed on to play me in the movie ‘New York Confidential.’ ICM is packaging the movie. The point person at ICM packaging is Margaret Marr, M-a-r-r. The executive producer is Ryan Babenzien. … They say that me and Piven look a lot alike, and I’m very much like, very alike in character and personality, and I’m very much like his Ari Gold character [on HBO’s ‘Entourage’], although I’ve never seen it. I’ve been in jail while it’s been on TV. Once again, thank you so much, I sincerely mean it. And, um, I guess I’ll be talking to you in the future. Have a great day.”
It turns out that the Hollywood talent agency International Creative Management does indeed own the rights to Itzler’s life story, in hopes of turning it into a theatrical release. But so far, there’s no director, no stars – and, more to the point, no screenplay.
But producer Babenzien, a former agent himself, is hopeful. “We’re looking for a writer right now. I think it’s a fantastic story, and it’s going to be a great movie,” he told Lowdown.
Babenzien added that in addition to Piven, “The Village” star Bryce Dallas Howard [pictured], daughter of Ron, is attached to play Natalia, Itzler’s girlfriend and the brothel’s biggest moneymaker. “She’s expressed her interest. She loves the idea, she loves the character.” Piven’s spokeswoman declined to comment, and Howard’s flack, Stephen Huvane, didn’t respond to messages.
Babenzien, who has never met Itzler, hardly needed to add: “Jason is the best publicist from jail.”
