XBiz.com posts a story on its site about some new anti-porn legiastion proposed by Rep. Chris Cannon, R-UT.
“H.R. 5528, known as the Pornography Jurisdiction Limitation Act of 2006, was introduced by Cannon in an effort to stop courts from functioning as legislatures,” the congressman said, according to the article.
“It is not the job of the courts to legislate,” Cannon said. “My legislation puts the power to protect families back in the hands of the states, where it rightfully belongs. If there are those who believe a state’s anti-pornography laws are too strict, they can find another state in which to live.”
This sounded kind of interesting so we looked up the particulars of H.R. 5528 www.cbo.gov/showdoc.cfm?index=2710&sequence=0 only to discover that it’s called theOmnibus Indian Advancement Act which would ratify a settlement agreement entered into by the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Imperial Irrigation District, the Coachella Valley Water District, and the Torres-Martinez Dessert Cahuilla Indian Tribe. It also would eliminate the requirement to repay loans for expert assistance made by the federal government to the Red Lake Band of the Chippewa Indians and the Minnesota Chippewa Tribes. In addition, the act would establish certain civil penalties, transfer federal land, and establish the American Indian Education Foundation. CBO estimates that implementing H.R. 5528 would increase direct spending by about $8 million in 2001.
Maybe Cannon or somebody got their numbers crossed.
