Massachusetts- Patrons frequenting the adult novelty and DVD store Amazing.net on Mystic Avenue may have been alarmed to find a sign giving notice of shortened shopping hours in recent weeks. But frequent solicitors of the adults only shop needn’t fret that they will have to find a new location – they’ll just have to come back during regularly scheduled hours. “It came to our attention that they were open past the designated hours of 11 p.m.,” said Building Commissioner Paul Mochi, adding that store managers immediately changed their hours following the receipt of a cease and desist order.
“They came under the same law that says any establishment in Medford must be closed by 11 p.m.,” Mochi said, emphasizing the store was in no way targeted because of the adult material sold. “The laws apply to them as they would anybody else.” Formerly Airborne For Men, Amazing.net first became a source of controversy among city officials when store owners applied for an operating license in 1996. The request was originally denied, but later overturned and the city was eventually forced to pay Amazing managers $10,000 in legal fees. In addition, managers of the store promised not to sell liquor, offer private viewing booths or employ nude or semi-nude entertainment. While that dispute was directly related to the explicit content available at the store, Mochi said the last development in the adult store saga was as routine as they come. City Councilor Paul Camuso said it was on a police ride-along in June that he discovered the store was staying open past it’s licensed hours. A cease and desist order was swiftly issued by Mochi, who said managers of the adult store have complied with their approved hours ever since. Mochi confirmed there are no plans to take further action at this time. Amazing managers were unavailable for comment.
