Bob from Dane [pictured with Dino Bravo] posts: Went to psk last night with dino bravo, paul the magic man, and my baby Kimberly [Sparkles]. Dino and I did our usual schtick, and then Kimberly came up and did a number that tore the house down. I do not know the song, as it is not from my time, but she had moves that stopped everyone. Powder was there and I told him we must put her on ksex, and he agreed. She really is a cutie, with dimples you can sink into on both cheeks. I am trying to encourage her to perform at the parties this week. Some patron should do the trick. Kimberly has done some scenes (girl-girl), did a private scene at the AURA party a few weeks back and Gordon and the other camera people, along with el Greco went wild.
As dino and I know, Sinatra sang you make me feel so young, and I say to my kim, you make us all feel young. We will be a regular at psk, so Seymour, keep our table.. be well, bob, dane entertainment.
Gene sez: Tuesday morning, Bob looked pretty young and pretty well fed. That’s because the Olive Garden lays out a pretty good spread for MDA volunteers who come in over the Labor Day weekend and donate their time manning the phones for donations. In his first attempt at gathering the adult industry herd on behalf of MDA, it went pretty well as far as Bob was concerned. Beside donations that totaled a little over $10,000 with more still trickling in, Bob had gathered volunteers to work over at KCET studios in LA. Bob drove down Sunday night with Tony Batman from KSEX radio and Elizabeth from Dane.
“They met me at my place,” says Bob. “We got there, walked in and most of the other volunteers from the business were already there. I didn’t recognize them. They were dressed so nicely and so appropriately. All the tattoos were covered. They just looked marvelous. They were just perfect. We had about 16 or 18 people show up during the course of the night. I got them on camera from eight to midnight, they answered calls, they did everything that was asked of them. I watched over them to make sure everything was good- it was so much better than any telethon I’ve ever done before. I was shocked. Because whoever thought that people would do that in this industry, show up that way, be there, be supportive and give me checks. It was just wonderful.”
Bob’s celebrating his 48th year as an MDA volunteer, but this is the first time he participated in a telethon as a member of the adult industry. Under circumstances that were more personal than anything else, Bob got a late start and had maybe six weeks to get something going. It was a frustratingly slow beginning but as he approached the telethon deadline, Bob started getting more donations and calls. According to Bob, this is predictable with telethons and that people generally wait until the last minute to make donations.
“It’s a matter of human nature that people will hold off to the very end,” states Bob. “I understand that.”
“Between the industry, and the donations that we at Dane made from sales that we had, we did pretty well. I’m very pleased the way it worked out. I’m gratified and I’ll never be afraid, again, to ask anyone from this industry to come down and help me. They showed up with flying colors- even the beautiful Vanessa Blue who has a hard time covering up her assets. She looked classy.”
[Bob’s one stipulation was that none of the women dress obvious enough to be pegged as hailing from the sex business.]
“These are just great people,” Bob continues. “I’m enamored with them. I’m so in awe because I’ve done this so many years with people who are professional people. And they didn’t conduct themselves in the same manner as these people did. The people who run the local feed came over and said your people are marvelous- they did a great job and can we count on you for next year. I said, sure, more than happy to. I never thought that would have happened.”
While the adult industry volunteers [presenting The Free Speech Coalition] spent four hours Sunday night at the studio, it’s on Monday that Jerry’s kids are generally there with their parents and their families.
“That makes it very nice,” says Bob. “We’re playing games; we’re playing checkers- we’re doing all kinds of things to keep ourselves busy. We raised a lot of money- more than last year- which is very important. They always want to raise a $1 more than the year before.”
Bob talks about a woman who held up a tiny leg brace belonging to a three month old tot that was stricken with MDA.
“You look at this brace and your heart just goes to pieces,” says Bob. “No parent should have to buy this or be involved with anything like this for a baby this young. It’s a tragedy and terrible to see things like this. This is why I’ve been doing this for so many years. My best friend as a kid contracted this and lasted for two years before he passed away. That’s when I got involved with the organization and tried to do whatever I could.”
“It’s something I don’t talk too much about,” Bob continues. “Especially in this industry. I haven’t talked too much about it until the last couple of weeks because I didn’t think I could get any support out of it. I didn’t think it was going to happen but it did. And I have no fear of it for next year. I would ask the same people, and I was told you won’t have to come to us next year, we’ll come to you. Which is nice. They see the good that it does.”
Male performer Dino Bravo was one of the chief contributors this year.
“Dino’s a great guy,” says Bob. “Dino had no qualms about giving me any money. And what he did was, he went on KSEX the other night and wanted to give me a check for $500. I had just mentioned- I appreciate it, but another $100 can send a kid to camp. He says, wait a minute. I’ll make it $600. That’s a real nice guy to do something like that. In this industry you never know whether you’re going to work tomorrow, the next day or the next week. To do something like that is very heartwarming. I’m very appreciative of Dino Bravo and everybody- all the people that you would think would never show up, did. They did their job and all stayed until the very end. It was wonderful to see the people come together this way.”
Bob talked about a moment at the telethon when he almost lost it.
“There was a man Augie- he’s 48 years old and he contracted Lou Gehrig’s disease,” Bob notes. “The man owns a fitness company. And he came out to Jerry with a check in his hand. His voice is slurred because he’s losing his speech now. That’s what happens when this disease takes hold- all your muscles go eventually. He was happy to be one of Jerry’s kids. The man is 48 years old. Everybody just lost it at this point. He gave a check to Jerry and could hardly lift his arm up. It’s like I’ve told this to people in the industry- and everybody I deal with- this disease knows no boundaries. It can hit you when you’re a child. It can hit you when you’re middle aged or older, like myself. It knows no age barrier, and it just devastates your whole family and your whole life because it comes out of nowhere. We have to try to find a cure and they’re very close to finding a cure. We can see the sun on the horizon. It’s going to happen. It’s just a matter of time.”
