Clubs Spent $$$ to Defeat Prop 401

Scottsdale, Arizona- More than $250,000 was spent to propel Scottsdale’s two topless clubs to a victory in last month’s Proposition 401 election, outdistancing the other side by a 37-1 margin.

Babe’s Cabaret and Skin Cabaret combined to contribute $250,254 through their political committee, Scottsdale Small Business Alliance Opposed to Proposition 401. Another $3,750 was donated by Lion & Thistle Productions, a business political consultant Lamar Whitmer said works with strip clubs.

The campaign spent $253,376 – including $83,377 in the final 2 1 /2 weeks before the election – on newspaper and television ads, campaign mailers, signs, door hangers and consulting, according to the post-primary campaign finance report filed Wednesday. The report is for the period of Aug. 23 to Oct. 2.

The clubs filed five days after last week’s deadline and paid a $50 fine, City Clerk Carolyn Jagger said.

Skin and Babe’s, which is partially owned by adult film mogul Jenna Jameson, previously spent $94,500 on a referendum effort to place the issue before voters after the City Council in December approved stricter regulations that would have banned lap dancing.

Scottsdale voters rejected Proposition 401 on Sept. 12, with 52 percent opposing the tougher regulations.

Proposition 401 supporters Yeson401.com spent $6,856, according to its report that was filed by the Oct. 12 deadline.

Most of that money was spent in the final week of the campaign, including purchases for signs, newspaper advertisements, phone calls and radio ads. The largest donation, $2,000, came from the Center for Arizona Policy, a Christian conservative group that organized the campaign. Other donations were from Messinger Mortuary and Chapel and individuals.
