Porn Valley- Caesar recalls his first on-camera sexual performance with a sense of dread. “[It was] horrible. When you look at porn, you think of it as just being sex. But once you get there, you realise there’s actually 14 people sitting around, talking about their day, while you’re trying to have sex. So I actually got quite nauseous.” It’s an intriguing admission, considering this is a man who’s featured in more than 20 adult films.
Caesar isn’t shy about any aspect of his career – after all, he can boast his own Best of… compilation – but he’s not boastful about it, either. In fact, he’s rather modest; a refreshing thing, really, considering the words humility and porn are rarely uttered in the same breath. “I have no idea how it’s happened when there’s thousands and thousands of porn stars; I still haven’t figured out what makes the few of us stay popular,” he says. “It’s just luck…but I can’t complain. I’m not sure what it is that did it, but whatever it is, thank you.”
It’s not the type of response you’d expect to hear from a man who has more muscles in his quadriceps than five of me combined, or has won more GAYVN statues than Steven Spielberg has won a Best Director Oscar.
“The first one I won was best newcomer, then best actor, then best performer. They’re really kind of hidden away so I’m not sure exactly how many. It’s not that I’m ashamed. I just don’t take myself that seriously. It’s just not that big a deal for me. I’m just fortunate enough to win and I appreciate the people for putting me on that platform. It is what it is.”
Modest as he is about his achievements, there’s no denying that for Caesar, seeing his success come to fruition is the fulfilment of a life-long ambition to be in show business. “I always wanted to be an actor or a model or something like that,” he says. “So I kind of ended up doing what I wanted. Probably not the same route that I imagined, but that’s the way it went.”
That route began in 1997 when he met porn magnate, Chi Chi LaRue. “I had a strip troupe with about six guys who I toured the US with,” he says. “Our agent booked us in a club right outside Chicago along with Chi Chi so we could meet. It was pretty much from that point … and it didn’t take too long for me to make a couple of movies for her.”One could be forgiven for thinking that his adult career was practically sealed from that fateful meeting: dancing in a troupe, a meeting with a porn director, a couple of movies and voila, instant porn fame. Yet for Caesar, starting out wasn’t as simple.
“At first, it was a real shock,” he says. “I did two movies, and it completely freaked me out and I didn’t do any more for like a year … Also, where I’m from, Indiana, it’s a very, very conservative, Midwest area. So I didn’t think anybody would find out me doing a couple of movies. But they found out right away and that made my life a difficult at home. Once I moved to California, it was fairly easy after that.”
Many of you would know that it’s been three years since he last appeared in a XXX film, but Caesar is fine with that. “I’m kind of phasing out of porn, doing my website, personal appearances and working for Manhunt,” he says. He is also in talks with a fashion label about starting his own line of clothes for men built like him. “I’m not going to say I’m not going to do porn, because never say never, but it’s definitely not in my priorities right now.”
Throughout the interview, despite the self-effacement, I was a bit wary that at some point, the porn-star attitude would unexpectedly rear its ugly head. But as we conclude our chat, I’m relieved to discover that there’s definitely no sign of a porn diva here.
“We’re all human beings,” he says. “We all have to get up and go through our days and I don’t think myself as any better than anybody else or I don’t like other people who do. I’m a pretty easygoing guy. Don’t bring me attitude and we’re all good.”
