Porn Valley- Last week I spoke to Bill Margold about the “Legends of Erotica” show www.adultfyi.com/read.aspx?ID=20500 which will be held in Las Vegas Friday night, January 12 at Ray Pistol’s, www.xxxdeepthroat.com Showgirls. Serena and Sean Michaels will be among those honored that night.
“The Legends of Erotica is just another of my ways of honoring the history of this business,” says Margold. “Probably the most important way because it’s indelible with the blocks of cement. I hope Al Goldstein can make it. I hope Herschel Savage can make it. Sean was seemingly honored when I wanted to bring him in, and I think he’ll have great presence up there particularly with Serena. It’s Serena’s night because she’s one of the queens of the earliest days.”
“Serena has a glow about her that very few in the history of this business ever had,” Margold continues. “There’s no pretension of Serena. Serena’s real, absolute down to earth- she was the flower child of X. She was a joy and she knows that I worship her.” [Margold wrote a story about her in LA Xpress last year.]
“She’s my- sort of- spiritual sister and I like it that way,” Margold continued. “I put her on the highest of pedestals- probably the only person higher would be Viper and ancillary to Serena- as I’ve always said- if we were to have a child, it would have been [Anita] Cannibal. And when Cannibal met Serena it looked like they belonged together.”
Margold talked about the time Serena met Cannibal at KSEX with the two of them looking like they had known one another for thousands of years.
“Serena has something- she’s real,” states Margold. “Holliday adored her; and it’s interesting to note that when I was put in the XRCO Hall of Fame, Serena was put in the same year. I remember being up on stage, and Viper, of course, wasn’t there, because Viper really hated going places. And I said, next to Viper, this woman means to me than anybody else in the world- and always has. She was gone out of my life for 24 years then resurfaced. And when she stepped off that bus at Union Station last February it’s like no time had gone by. She’s had some problems. She’s been through a lot. She never had killer instincts persuant to this business but her name still registers among the most important in the history of this business and always will. It’s great that I can put Sean in with her and also in the sense, Jill Kelly. [One of Jim Holliday’s angels who will be inducted as such.]
“Of course with Holliday, everyone of his angels was his favorite with nicknames on top of nicknames,” says Margold. If he had his druthers, Margold said he’d love to have Selena Steele be the host of the Legends Show.
“Legends should host Legends show,” he thinks. “If she doesn’t, hopefully, Cannibal will be up there. Cannibal can do it. I know Christi Lake isn’t really involved in the business any more but she’s a former carnal medal of honor winner and perhaps she could come in and host it as well. Sean and Serena are good enough reasons to come to the event. But, hopefully, Jill Kelly will get back to me. She lives up in Las Vegas.”
Margold says Sunny Lane will also be at the Legends show and calls her The Shirley Temple of X.
“She’s the best right now,” says Margold. “Nothing matches what Sunny has. Boy, she’s adorable and very vital to the whole PAW foundation cause because that’s where the money raised at ‘Legends’ goes. Pistol is very generous and always has been- a wonderful man. There’s no more awards I can give him.”
Relative to award shows in general, Margold said he was pretty much divorcing himself from the XRCO show, particularly after Jim Holliday passed away.
“When Holliday died, the XRCO died,” says Margold. “When we created it, it was a truth and honor, limited edition-type of situation. It’s inflated now to the point of almost bursting. It’s nothing what AVN has. AVN will be giving shrink wrap awards in the near future.”
Of his own AVN Hall of Fame award, Margold says that’s the only one he doesn’t have.
“I gave it to Reb and he managed to lose it- I have the won they game me last year for acting. That was sort of cool, and I probably should do an article about that.”
Margold and I got on the subject of books being written by the porn establishment and I suspect he’s got one in him.
“What I’m doing now in a strange way is preparing it,” says Margold. “I’m writing for Swank and I’m doing a series called Those Were The Lays. I’m really having a good time because it’s literally a day by day by day, blow by blow by blow involvement in this business. The first one hit the stands and was preceded by a Marc Medoff introduction of me which was rather moving. I’ve written five installments. There’s something there. In fact I’ve talked to Al Goldstein’s publicist, and I said I got a book in me that would not so much blow Goldstein’s away, but it’s the other half of the traffic accident. My part of the road is a lot less corrupted in the sense I’ve never done drugs; I’ve never had any money so I couldn’t be corrupted by the money and I’ve lived a different kind of life in this business.
“I’m still here, I’m sure, much to the lamentations of my enemies who would love me to go away. But I’m not going away. It was pointed out to me recently that I’m running out of enemies. I said that’s not true- none of them have died yet.”
“One in particular- Cuddles Kernes- has gotten pathetic. He’s the Flounder of AVN- as I’ve always said- his legacy is God knows what. He’s not going anywhere because there is nowhere else for him to go.”
In passing, Margold said it’s breaking his heart that Jim South left the business.
“I go to that office now and it’s a graveyard,” Margold reflects sadly. “He’s gone. [Brett] Rockman’s moved in with his production company. I guess Marcus has taken over two of the offices.
For his part, Margold’s PAW booth will be attached to the Arrow booth at the AEE show.
“Arrow has, apparently, what is a mechanical bull and a bunch of cars and God knows what else,” adds Margold. “It’ll be a circus which it always is.”
That all being said, Margold feels the best way to see Las Vegas is through the rearview mirror.
