NY- Two reputed Gambino mobsters “bled dry” the owners of a Chelsea strip club and then gave the cash to their crime family bosses, prosecutors charged yesterday.
Accused capo Salvatore (Fat Sal) Scala, 64, and his associate Thomas (Monk) Sassano, 61, extorted hundreds of thousands of dollars from the owners of the upscale VIP Club on W. 20th St., the feds alleged.
“[The owners] were afraid to say no to Sal Scala and the Gambino crime family that stood behind him,” Manhattan federal prosecutor Eric Snyder told jurors during opening statements yesterday in the extortion conspiracy trial.
But Scala’s attorney, Lindy Urso, said Scala was a silent partner to the club’s dead owner and was simply protecting his investment after the club got new management.
Mob informant Michael (Mikey Scars) DiLeonardo, whose testimony led to the conviction of former Gambino mob boss Peter Gotti, is expected to testify for the prosecution. DiLeonardo will testify that Scala gave about $1,000 a week in money he extorted from the strip club to Gambino bosses, Snyder said.
