Edmonton [lifewise.canoe.ca]- Want to add a stash of homemade adult film to the time capsule? You’re not alone.
Forget those wide-grinning snapshots posed before exquisite sunsets. Average couples are whipping out their camcorders, hitting record, and creating home movies that are anything but old fashioned.
Want to add a stash of homemade porn to the time capsule? You’re not alone.
In fact, former porn star Jason Danilak has built a burgeoning career that is, in part, based on regular folk eager to strip their wears — and inhibitions — for the camera.
In 2001, Danilak founded the Edmonton-based Real Productions, which has just released the first volume in a series called, World’s Horniest Home Videos, starring the best in amateur porn.
The compilation, plucked from the hefty pile of homemade flicks the company receives monthly, means you could spot your local butcher, delivery man, or middle-aged neighbours lapping up their 15 minutes of fame, porno style.
“It’s so much more mainstream now,” observes Danilak of the do-it-yourself skin-flick craze.
“On some level, we all want to do what the porn stars do, especially guys,” says the 40-year-old.
When it comes to porn, there’s an attitude that says, ‘If he can do it, so can I.’
That foolhardy bravado, however, doesn’t always deliver.
“A lot of it is really bad stuff,” says Danilak.
“But every now and then you get a really good one where the performers are attractive and performing for the camera.”
While not everyone is excited by the idea of making their private lives public, for those who are, the reasons are varied.
For viewers, the allure is knowing they’re watching real people they might actually have a shot with. Adult films, once thriving on typical blonde, breast-implanted types, has seen a demand for a more candid and realistic approach.
A myriad of websites, from the membership-based AdultFriendFinder to Xtube and Porntube, are overflowing with everyday people. “The motivations are different for everyone,” says Danilak.
“When you post on one of these sites, it isn’t for money, but for exhibitionism.”
There’s also the urge to document our more basic instincts while still in our prime. That was one reason behind recording sex sessions in two previous relationships, one 20-something man admits.
With one former girlfriend, he floated around the idea of making X-rated flicks while they were taking nude photographs. The couple soon found themselves graduating to testing their home movie-making skills.
“Of course there was some hesitation on both our parts, but there was enough trust that she knew I wouldn’t show friends or post it on the Internet,” he explains.
What he finds satisfying about it now is the willingness captured in the moments.
“There’s porn where you can tell it’s an act, but it’s the enthusiasm and the fact that both of them, once they got past the initial shyness, enjoyed being movie stars. That and the fact they knew I’d be watching them later was exciting.”
There may, however, come a point when he’ll bid farewell to these creations.
“If I got married and had a family, I’d get rid of the videos,” he says.
“The videos weren’t done out of a desire to catalogue or record my conquests. It was just something fun.”
A problem Danilak runs into is receiving movies shot without permission. For legal and ethical reasons, these submissions are immediately rejected.
He recalls one eyebrow-raising submission featuring a husband having intercourse with his wife.
“He hid the camera in the laundry basket and put some clothes over it,” he says.
“It was obvious his wife didn’t know he was filming.”
Erotic offerings he selects must feature willing participants and be free of the more commonly made filming errors — camera movement, using lower end cameras and insufficient lighting.
“Lighting is really important,” Danilak says. “That’s the thing amateurs don’t understand. You want bright, stark light because the viewer wants to see it.”
