PTC files complaint against NBC’s ‘Las Vegas’ for Nudity

Last week’s two-hour episode of “Las Vegas” is almost certainly the series
finale, but that’s not stopping conservative watchdog group Parents Television Council from launching an indecency campaign against the show.

The PTC said they filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission over NBC’s Feb. 15 broadcast of the “Vegas” season conclusion. In the episode, three shadowy naked women are shown on a casino’s security monitor.

The complaint comes a day after ABC appealed a $1.2 million FCC fine levied for a nude scene in a 2003 episode of “NYPD Blue.” “Vegas” typically airs at 10 p.m., but the PTC noted the show runs at 9 p.m. in the Central and Mountain time zones.

PTC President Tim Winter accused NBC of trying to test the government regulatory agency in the wake of the “NYPD” decision.

“NBC seems eager to test the FCC’s resolve to fine stations for violating broadcast decency laws,” said Winter. “It’s like they’re trying to find some sort of standard for making it through FCC’s guidelines.”

“Vegas” has ceased production and has not been renewed. Industry oddmakers say the show is not expected to return next season, but Winter said his organization isn’t concerned with impacting future episodes anyway.

“This has little to do with the show and everything to do with a network that’s trying to establish what the newest level of nudity is for broadcast television,” he said.

Earlier this week, the PTC went after another modestly rated primetime show, calling on advertisers to boycott CBS’s airing of the Showtime hit “Dexter.”

Winter said he’s received supportive calls from some advertisers pledging not to buy ads on the show, but that previously committed sponsors have not dropped out.
