Back in 1969, as a young reporter, I had a desk in a newsroom next to Foster Winans. Winans went on to become a convicted journalist. I wound up in porn. What does that say for coincidence?

From the Wall Street Journal: Among the factoids we remember from our corporations class is the name Foster Winans, the former WSJ reporter who faced insider trading charges for trading in advance of his market-moving column, “Heard On The Street.” In 1987, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld Winans’s mail and wire fraud convictions.

This morning, we discovered that Winans shares something with Ashley Alexandra Dupré, better known as “Kristen,” the fledgling pop-artist-cum-call-girl who allegedly serviced Eliot Spitzer last month in the Mayflower Hotel. What’s the link? Their lawyer, Don Buchwald [pictured].

Buchwald, a litigator at Kelley Drye, argued for Winans before the high court in 1987. Now, after being appointed by the Southern District, Buchwald is representing Dupré in SpitzerGate. Late yesterday, Buchwald confirmed a report on the NYT website identifying Dupre, born Ashley Youmans, as the 22-year-old who briefly appeared in federal court in Manhattan on Monday.

For those keeping score at home: Spitzer is being represented by a former colleague, Paul Weiss’s Michele Hirshman. As for the four tied to the prostitution ring, Mark Brener is being represented by Jennifer Brown at Federal Defenders of New York; Temeka Lewis ditched her court-appointed lawyer for Marc Agnifilo of Brafman & Associates; Tanya Hollander is being represented by Mary Mulligan at Friedman Kaplan; and Cecil Suwal is using Daniel Parker at Parker & Carmody.
