Haiti- A local family of missionaries is back home after helping people devastated by Hurricane Ike in a third world country. Don Adamson was in Haiti helping the poor with food, shelter, and schools. He captured the damage Ike caused with his video camera.
Adamson is candid– saying he used to shoot pornography– but, then turned his life to God and became a missionary. Now, Adamson hopes to inspire others to give to the less fortunate with the images his captures on video.
“It just shocks you, there’s just no other way to put it.”
Flash flooding destroyed homes, crops, and villages.
“I know Hurricane Ike brought its own damage to this area, but if you can picture complete villages wiped away…. They could watch their children wash out in the flood and one lady who is the leader in my area watched her two sons go down river.”
Adamson caught it all on video. He’s a former adult entertainment videographer turned minister. The Clermont County native is a missionary doing outreach in Haiti’s villages.
“Mission of Hope we have a church we have a school of 1200 students. We have an orphanage of 60 students, we have a hospital being built.”
Adamson brings his wife and 16-year-old daughter with him.
“I told my wife when I married her, if you marry me, I’ll build you a house in the Caribbean. she didn’t know I was talking about Haiti.”
He says the family that prays together– stays together. Daughter Laura hosts kids clubs.
“It’s just a joy, just to see smiles on their faces, because you can’t even imagine what they go through and you you have so much and you realize then you take it so much for granted.”
Wife Sandee works with women.
“I teach, I do Bible study. I go to villages and I work with our praise and worship team.”
The family says without animals or crops, Haitians are facing starvation. Despite having to leave their family in Ohio, the Adamsons are looking forward to seeing their new family in Haiti.
“It’s a tradeoff, you know, say goodbye to one so hello to another.”
The family will go back to Haiti on October 16th. One of Adamson’s missions while he’s home is raising funds to replace a year’s food supply for a school in a Haitian village.
Adamson says CBS Evening News with Katie Couric recently aired a story on “Mission of Hope.” He says the more awareness he can bring to the devastation in Haiti, the better.
