New Jersey- Former Assemblyman Neil Cohen (D-Union) was indicted by a state grand jury on charges of possession of child pornography and official misconduct after a lengthy investigation into allegations he had possessed and viewed the illegal material on a computer at his at his state office earlier this year.

He resigned in June after the investigation made headlines.

The criminal charges were announced today by Attorney General Anne Milgram during an afternoon news conference in Trenton. Cohen faces a maximum of more than 30 years in prison and more than $450,000 if convicted on the four charges.

Authorities began investigating Cohen, 57, in mid-July after a staffer discovered a computer printout of a nude girl and informed the two Democratic lawmakers who share a legislative office with Cohen in Union Township, Sen. Raymond Lesniak and Assemblyman Joseph Cryan, sources said.

The two lawmakers informed the Legislature’s Office of Legislative Services, which notified the Attorney General’s Office. Lesniak and Cryan issued a joint statement confirming the matter had been taken to law enforcement.

Cohen’s Assembly seat was filled in August by Annette Quijano of Elizabeth. y.
