With Marketing and Crossover Nominations, The Transplanted Craig Valentine Ponders the Future

Porn Valley- Craig Valentine said he wanted to talk about the state of the porn union.

I figured he wanted to talk about the state of the new Mickey Rourke movie in which Rourke is being given some serious consideration for an Oscar nod for his portrayal of a pro wrestler on the skids. I figure Valentine could relate to that.

Valentine honestly says he hasn’t heard of the movie.

“I don’t pay attention to the world,” Valentine laughs.

“The business in LA is beyond dead,” states Valentine, getting back to porn and the issue at hand.

“Like going out of business dead. Who’s the next to fall? Who’s going to survive? Who isn’t?”

I tell Valentine I know longer have opinions on that subject, that I just count the body bags.

“Well it sucks to see people go down,” he replies. “But I am curious to see what 2009 is going to bring. There is no more middle in the porn business. It’s either high line product or crap [for the cost factor].

“Nobody’s buying the middle of the road stuff anymore. Everybody’s making the comment about what I do, oh, it’s wrestling. Yeah, you try to get a wrestling show together. It’s a lot easier to shoot one of those big budget movies in the adult business than it is to put one of these together.”

By all standards, Valentine didn’t have a bad year as long as you don’t count his divorce. He started a wrestling company [NRPW], has been nominated for an AVN Crossover award and just sold his wrestling show to Playboy TV for airing.

“They altered the title and I wasn’t too pleased with that. They’re going to call it Bonein’ Professional Wrestling.”

[Of course I’m wondering if that was Christie Hefner’s last official act to set off a dynamite charge within the company.]

“And I’m the first male actor to go over to sports entertainment,” Valentine continues.

“I think I got my head split open often enough.” Although this year, Valentine moved his company from Florida to California. Now the real fun begins.

“I’ve been laying low, getting everything ready for AVN and what’s going to launch for 2009,” Valentine goes on to say.

Besides everything else Valentine’s been nominated for Best Online marketing campaign with regard to NRPW.

“You got to admit, I marketed the shit out of that thing,” he says. “And it’s only going to get bigger.”

Valentine was at Porn Star Karaoke Tuesday night and, according to him, he was warned by people that he was headed for the same mistakes Rob Black made when he started up XPW. The difference is Black pissed away nearly $2.5 million on that venture. Whereas Valentine, thanks again to that divorce, doesn’t have that kind of money to piss away.

“The thing is we are a little bit different,” says Valentine. “We are the first adult stars that became pro wrestlers. We do have names in there and we are mixing sex with a background storyline.”

In an interview which he did last week for AVN, Valentine also stated that he wasn’t trying to compete with Vince McMahon, as if anyone could at this stage.

“I’d rather see the guys that are on my show go on to bigger and better things. I’ll never be as big as the WWE but it would be nice to see my guys go there. It is the ultimate dream to be the first adult film actor to walk through the WWE curtain even if it’s only once.”

According to Valentine, one of the wrestlers he had on the Bakersfield show when he first started doing shows out here got scooped up by the WWE training camp.

Then there was Dustin Rhodes who appeared to have been on the outs with the big boys. But as soon as he was on Valentine’s show, Rhodes found himself back on Monday Night Raw.

“Then, again, he’ll be appearing in NRPW No. 4,” says Valentine.

But Valentine won’t say if Rhodes is doing anything of a sexual nature.

“Well I did make him an adult film star,” laughs Valentine.

“The last time I checked that movie is rated XXX. Still, no matter what if you do or you don’t you’re still in a XXX-rated movie. Doesn’t that make you an adult film actor? Last time I checked. Even with the pathetic sex scenes I do they still consider me an adult male actor. I’ve been doing shitty sex scenes for 18 years.”

Another little unusual tidbit in this whole wrestling scenario is the fact that pro wrestler Gangrel, aka The Vampire Warrior, is nominated for directing a porn movie in the Pro-Am category.

“Basically we have the first former WWE super star nominated for an adult film,” says Valentine. “He will be at the AVN show this year.”

Because Vegas is having financial problems, Valentine is being jacked up on venue costs for putting on his show during AEE.

“Which makes sense,” he says.

“The last hotel & casino we negotiated with said they’d rather the place be empty and lose money than take a lower price.”

“If we have a ring or don’t have a ring Evan’s [Stone] going to have to defend his title against Gangrel in an old fashioned street fight,” elaborates Valentine. “Evan’s going to put his belt up.”

Valentine, who had the belt, sounds like he’s taken enough licks with the split open heads contusions and general body discomfort which he’s generated in the wrestling scheme of things.

“Then we have a big party planned after the award show,” he says on a lighter note.

Commenting on Hulk Hogan’s new Celebrity Championship Wrestling league, while Valentine says he hasn’t had an opportunity watch the show, he’d love to have an opportunity to jump in the ring with Danny Bonaduce.

“He’s just got the arrogant attitude,” says Valentine. “We’ll take him to school.”

In the scheme of things, Valentine’s also signed a guest referee to his roster named Russ Weakland.

“He’s a producer for TMZ,” Valentine explains.

“He was at AVN for a promo taping last week about becoming a guest referee for our federation. I figure his first duty when we put him on TV is ref’ing the fatal three-way ladies match for the championship. Only problem is some of the ladies are bigger than he is.”
