As for herself, Karina says condoms are now a mandatory issue with her, Karina remembering when she first got into the business and how certain companies put undue pressure on her to work without condoms. Karina imagines Roxx, at 18, must have experienced similar instances.
Karina: I have made a great living for myself in this business, but I think everyone should take responsibility- even the companies. Let’s say all the talent today made a choice that we’re not going to work without a condom. The fans, then, wouldn’t have a choice. It’s responsible and we need to be responsible not to risk our lives for entertainment. We’re risking our lives for their pleasure. That’s a pretty high price to pay. I’m doing what I feel what is right to do and I’m putting my name at risk and my job opportunities behind this.
I don’t even know this girl but I think the right thing is to help her. It’s a difficult situation. HIV is a serious thing. It’s not just something- hey gosh- we’re get some cocktails and work through this thing. From now on I’m condom-only. If you don’t want to hire me, don’t hire me.
Gene: You said when you first came into the business you were taken advantage of. In what ways.
Karina: Because I didn’t no any better and I was told this was the only way to do it- without condoms. I still have done it. It was stupid of me but I will not to it again. I was pretty much told there was no career if you did condoms. Or that there’s not a lot of work for you. I was over 30 and I felt pressure to perform and risk my life. Let alone these young girls.
I know how some people work in this business and I’ve seen it. I’ve seen how they get these young girls to do anything. I see that as taking advantage. And this is very upsetting. So I want to help this girl who may be in shock. There’s no words to describe how you feel when you’re detected with HIV. With this I want to bring awareness to this industry. How often do you see an adult website that mentions HIV? That’s the risk I’m taking because I think this is the right thing to do.
Karina said fans will be kept informed as to how much money has been raised on behalf of Roxx. “I’m hoping that everyone will dig in,” Karina said. “I’m sure anyone would appreciate this kind of support if they were in that type of situation.”
