Panic in the Biz?

SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. – Nervous porn actors flocked to an HIV-testing center Friday after two performers tested positive for the virus, fanning panic and a partial shutdown of the San Fernando Valley’s lucrative X-rated movie industry.

“Test me, brother!” porn actor/director Sylvio declared, entering the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation clinic in Sherman Oaks, Calif., where the wall-mounted coat rack is made from erotic hooks.

Sylvio was distraught because his friend Darren James is one of the infected actors, who is believed to have spread the disease to 22-year-old porn starlet Lara Roxx during an unprotected sex scene last month.

“He’s a good guy. It’s sad. This is bad,” said Sylvio, dressed in a flashy green linen suit and Panama hat for his visit to the clinic, which is run by retired porn star-turned-Ph.D. Sharon Mitchell.

Another actor who came to find out his test results was agitated. “I’m negative, but now I have to wait two weeks to know for sure,” he said. The virus takes 21 to 60 days to show up.

A husband-wife porn team who had just arrived from Florida signed up for HIV testing hoping a clean bill of health would get them work. “The company that promised us a job here is shut down, so now we’re looking. It’s costing us $100 a day to be here. I want out of this town,” said the woman.

In the three weeks before James found out he was infected, he had sex with 14 actresses, including Roxx, and they in turn had sex with 51 other performers, mostly males.

Now, all 65 performers in the chain have been “quarantined” from performing, said Mitchell, who earned advanced degrees in public health administration and human sexuality after she retired from sex films in 1995.

Final test results won’t be known till June 8, Mitchell said. “We have it contained as long as the quarantined actors don’t work until they’ve cleared.”

“We counsel them that HIV and STDs are an occupational hazard. These actors are doing high-risk sex acts every day. We can pound it in about using condoms, but then some father-figure producer will tell them it’s OK without one,” said Mitchell.

Chris Webber, production manager for sex-flick firm Jill Kelly Productions, said shutting down until June will cost money. “We’re dealing with people’s lives here. No amount of money is worth someone’s life, morally or otherwise. I couldn’t live with myself if even one person contracted HIV because we continued production.”
