Park City, UT/New York, NY- TLA Releasing has named Derek Curl as Head of Production and Development, in association with Curl’s New York-based company Caveat Films. The North American and United Kingdom based distributor will produce six gay original films for 2009, tapping into genres ranging from comedies to twisted romance and moving documentaries. Curl is currently with the TLA Releasing team at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
“TLA Releasing’s mission to continue developing original productions is a natural evolution of the company,” says Raymond Murray, President of TLA Releasing. “Both TLA and Caveat Films are looking to bring filmmaker’s stories to life and present them in various forms of entertainment, from theatrical to home video to original online content.”
Upcoming projects include director Spencer Schilly’s (TLA’s The Houseboy) fourth film My Pet Hustler, a twisty, dark comedy starring Jonah Blechman of the Another Gay Movie franchise. Morgan John Fox (OMG HA HA) is tapped to direct Love in Action, a controversial yet inspiring documentary about Zach Stark who was kidnapped by his parents and sent to Memphis-based Love in Action, a gay “rehabilitation” camp. The event sparked a huge protest via social networking sites in support for Stark, leading to the eventual closure of the center. Additional projects will be announced in April, 2009.
“I’m proud to be a part of the TLA family’s mission to discover, fund, and establish a reoccurring relationship with new talent,” says Derek Curl, Head of Production and Development.
TLA Releasing is also working with Curl’s Caveat Films to produce two, gay short film compilations scheduled for release in late 2009. With the partnership, the companies plan to seek out international co-productions, develop original content for the internet and create a studio for filmmakers to tell their stories. Caveat Films also produced Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild! and The Houseboy.
