Fort Lauderdale- Fort Lauderdale city commissioners made good on their vow to stop porn king Larry Flynt from opening a racy shop at 1500 E. Sunrise Blvd., where the old Peaches CD shop was, by giving the first of two necessary votes to a new law that would ban the display or advertisement of sexually oriented material that can be seen from the public right-of-way.
The law also would redefine adult bookstores by decreasing the amount of adult material that must be sold in order to label the business as being sexually oriented. The law is aimed at preventing the business from opening near Victoria Park. Sexually oriented shops are not allowed near churches, residences or schools. The new law would apply to anyone applying for an occupational license, and might apply to existing stores, City Attorney Harry Stewart said.
