I’ll be the first to say it…winner of the Rush Limbaugh lookalike contest in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Lincoln, NE – The local businessman known as Doctor John has been in trouble with the law. Now he wants to make the laws in Lincoln.

“I want to protect people’s rights. That’s what I’ve always been an advocate of,” says John Haltom.

The owner of several adult novelty and video shops has fought for his own rights. He believes judges and juries wrongly convicted him of obscenity laws in Nebraska and Utah. Haltom sat in a jail cell for six months in Douglas County and 30 days in Salt Lake City, Utah. Now he wants to sit on the Lincoln City Council. He has put campaign signs all over Lincoln. His staff makes them right in his Lincoln store.

Because Haltom is a convicted felon in Utah, we checked with the Secretary of State’s office in Lincoln to see if he can hold a public office. The office says he needs a pardon or his civil rights to be restored. Haltom believes he’s good to go. He says, “I can’t own a gun, but I can vote. As soon as I heard I pulled the thing off, I registered to vote immediately.”

The sex toy shop owner registered as a Republican. “Does that mean you have to be liberal?,” Haltom asks. “I know some freaky Republicans and I know some freaky religious people in Utah.”

One thing he has going for him in the city election is name recognition. One woman says, “Doctor John of the Doctor John’s?” When asked if porn to politics will work, one man tells Action 3 News, “It should. They’re kind of the same bedfellows.”

One issue Haltom is already working on, he says, is the troubled economy. When asked about his stimulus package? Dr. John smiles, laughs and says, “It’s for sale for 25 dollars at our store.”

Haltom says he does have ideas. He wants to lower property taxes, legalize gambling and get a casino built in Lincoln.

Of course, it will be up the voters. The primary election is set for April 7th. Seven people have filed for office. They are running for three open at large seats on the Lincoln City Council. The general election is May 5th.
