Detroit- [www.freep.com]- A former Monroe High School teacher accused of having sex with an 18-year-old student has been placed on two years’ probation.
Additionally, Kelly Abdo, 28, of Luna Pier has agreed to surrender her teaching license and stop fighting her termination.
“We thought it was fair to all sides, and we thought it accomplished what the victims wanted,” said Monroe County prosecutor Bill Nichols, noting that he considered the school system a victim as well. “Schools should be a place where students are safe and there’s a productive learning environment.”
Authorities began investigating the math teacher last year when, following a house party, students reported seeing her have sex with an 18-year-old student in a nearby car. In February, she pleaded no contest to one count of indecent exposure and faced up to a year in jail.
In addition to the probation, Monroe County District Court Judge Terrence Bronson today ordered her to 30 days of community service in lieu of jail time, and $1,175 in court costs and fines.
