Colorado- A jury has found a Colorado man guilty of first-degree murder for beating a transgender woman to death with a fire extinguisher.
Jurors deliberated only about two hours today before convicting 32-year-old Allen Andrade in the death of 18-year-old Angie Zapata [pictured] in Greeley.
Andrade was also convicted of a bias-motivated crime. It’s believed to be the first time anyone has been prosecuted under Colorado’s bias crime statute for a crime involving a transgender person.
Prosecutors argued Andrade killed Zapata out of his dislike for homosexuals. Defense attorneys say Andrade snapped when he discovered Zapata was biologically male.
A first-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory life sentence without parole.
