NY- From www.silive.com- The Brooklyn man accused of strangling a Staten Island woman with a hair dryer cord in her apartment was indicted today for murder.
Calvin Lawson, 28, [pictured] strangled 26-year-old Caroline Wimmer in her Greenleaf Avenue home in West Brighton on March 28 because he believed he she was spreading rumors [on MySpace] that he was cheating on his then-pregnant girl friend, prosecutors allege. Police say the defendant confessed to the crime.
Lawson, who is in jail, is to be arraigned Wednesday in state Supreme Court, St. George, on second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter charges. If ultimately convicted of murder he could face 25 years to life behind bars.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Lawson slayed the Susan Wagner High School alumna because he believed she was whispering to his girlfriend that he was having an affair. The woman told the Advance on Tuesday that she miscarried Lawson’s child last week and she did not believe he is the murderer.
Lawson was arrested Monday at a Ward Island homeless shelter.
A former Mariners Harbor man, Joshua K. Perry, 23, is also charged in the case. Authorities allege Perry, while AWOL from the Marine Corps, helped Lawson clean up the murder scene. Perry then allegedly fled to the U.S. Marine facility at Parris Island, S.C., to hide from police. He was collared last week.
Perry was indicted Monday on a single felony count of hindering prosecution.
