Quote of the week: “She threw a pair of boxers in my face and asked me what they smelled like”

from www.philly.com -An 18-year-old man told a Delaware County jury yesterday that a neighbor initiated sex with him when he was 14 by throwing underwear in his face and bragging about her sexual exploits with one of his buddies.

“She threw a pair of boxers in my face and asked me what they smelled like,” the teen testified on the second day of trial for Lisa Scott, 41, of Linwood. “I thought it was disgusting.”

The teen – who was in handcuffs and in custody on rape charges in an unrelated case – said that despite his initial disgust, he allowed Scott to initiate oral and vaginal sex with him.

Scott is charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and related charges for allegedly having sex with five teen boys.

The 18-year-old also testified that Scott, a 1994 Temple grad who worked in psychology, had given him a sex toy – a plastic vagina.

He admitted that he was in custody on rape charges and that he has a juvenile record that includes a robbery conviction.

The five teens who have accused Scott of having sex with them are friends, according to testimony. All said that they met her through friends, neighbors or family members when they were between 13 and 16 and that she had provided them with alcohol and expensive gifts.

Another of the alleged victims, now 18, mumbled while on the stand yesterday and contradicted statements he’d made previously. At the preliminary hearing, he denied telling anyone about the sexual contact, but yesterday, he said he had told a friend.

He said that he and Scott had sex four or five times and that it was always unprotected.

Defense attorney Mark Much was trying to cast doubt on the case by claiming the Lower Chichester Township Police Department had failed to collect DNA from Scott’s home and by suggesting that Scott was being persecuted by the department for filing a private complaint against an officer in 2007. The nature of the complaint has yet to be divulged in court.

Scott remains in prison on $250,000 bail. Her trial continues today in Delaware County Court.

Update: from www.philly.com – Lisa Scott had been jailed since March for allegedly having sex with five teen boys inside her Linwood home.

It took a Delaware County jury only a few hours to set her free.

“She came to the courthouse for justice and she didn’t leave empty-handed,” said defense attorney Mark Much. “She’s going home.”

Scott’s acquittal on about two dozen charges followed three days of vague and inconsistent testimony by her accusers – four of whom have juvenile records.

During trial, an 18-year-old testified that Scott, 41, had given him a plastic vagina and that he began having sex with her when he was 14. But he arrived in court wearing handcuffs because he’s facing charges in an unrelated rape case.

A 15-year-old said he and Scott had sex last year when he was living at her White Avenue home. But the teen, who was arrested on theft charges the night before he took the stand, had previously recanted that allegation and had tried to get his friends to do the same.

And a third alleged victim, now 18, mumbled through his testimony, contradicting his previous statements.

Much called the teens bold-faced liars, saying he was surprised that the Bible “didn’t burst into flames” when they swore to tell the truth.

When asked Thursday if she had been sexually active with the boys, Scott looked directly at the jury of seven men and five women and said, “Absolutely not.”

After deliberating for about three hours, the jury found Scott not guilty of sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, endangering the welfare of children and related offenses. They even acquitted her of supplying alcohol to the boys, as they had claimed.

Scott, a 1994 Temple grad who had worked in psychology, hugged Much after the verdict was read. Her face was beet-red from crying.

“Thank you,” Scott’s mother yelled to the jury box.

“Yeah, thanks,” one of the teen’s relatives muttered, her voice heavy with sarcasm.

The high-profile case is the third to end in acquittal this year in Delaware County for a defendant accused of a sex crime involving children.

Jerry Lazaroff, a Radnor psychologist who ran the juvenile court’s family-intervention program, was found not guilty in May of inappropriately touching four young children during private therapy sessions.

Two months later, a judge cleared Albert Silveri, a former state police trooper, of soliciting sex with children online.

Like Scott’s accusers, the children who testified against Lazaroff provided conflicting testimony.

District Attorney G. Michael Green conceded that the teens’ criminal backgrounds made them poor witnesses, but defended the decision to take the case to trial.

“Our obligation is to move forward to protect them and protect the community from this kind of conduct,” Green said. “They’re very, very difficult cases, and they often turn on the testimony of the victim when weighed against the testimony of a defendant.”
