Whatever your feelings about pornography, you’ll probably have your eyes opened by “Naked Ambition,” Michael Grecco’s documentary about three days he spent photographing stars, producers, fans and others at the annual Adult Video News Awards Show in Las Vegas.
Grecco’s efforts already have resulted in a huge coffee table book — “Naked Ambition: An R-Rated Look at an X-Rated Industry” — but this film goes even further in examining this world of flesh and fantasy.
Grecco, a show-biz portraitist and former photojournalist, tells us right away in his narration that he isn’t interested in shooting porn. Yeah, there’s some nudity here, but it doesn’t feel erotic. It’s more matter of fact than anything, which makes sense when you consider what an average work day for these individuals entails.
And he was determined to photograph his subjects — we’re talking heavy hitters like Jenna Jameson, Sunny Lane and Joanna Angel — not as lurid icons of pulchritude but as individuals. Realizing it was all too easy for porn performers to fall back on clichéd poses and attitudes — bared teeth and thrust-out hips — he coaxed them into revealing themselves as much emotionally as physically.
You come away from this film with the sense that the adult video industry is far more professional and less sleazy than a decade ago. None of these sex stars behaves like she has been exploited, and while there are definitely a few bubbleheads among their ranks, most seem to be intelligent and informed.
While Grecco photographed his subjects in a makeshift studio in a hotel room, he had a small army of camera operators working the convention floor to collect funny and informative (but, curiously, not shocking) vignettes.
Some of these digressions are mind-boggling. Like the Taiwanese rocket scientist (literally, he works on rockets) whose true love is designing vibrators for women. Listening to him describe the intricacies of his phallic inventions in heavily accented English is like some sort of surreal burlesque comedy skit.
Or the guy who makes life-size silicon women with all the equipment in the right places and swears by his product. Ewwwwweh.
And it’s fun to see the stars interacting with their fans, mostly guys who look like they haven’t dated since high school. These encounters are a weird mix of adoration and respect on the part of the guys, and studied naughtiness by the women. The weird thing? It almost feels innocent.
There’s even a segment featuring three gorgeous blondes — they wear tight tees right out of Hooters — who work the crowd as Christian missionaries, arguing that you can do porn and still love Jesus.
