Flynt Store Set to Open Thursday

Lexington, KY- Giant “Hustler” signs are being made. Final inspections are nearing.

Few things stand in the way of a July 1 grand opening of Lexington’s Hustler store near Interstate 75 and Winchester Road.

But before Jimmy Flynt, brother of Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt, can open the doors of his cafe/gift shop, he must provide the city with a detailed list of what — aside from coffeecakes — he intends to sell.

“They’re holding my feet to the fire,” Flynt said in a phone interview. “They’re treating me bad. They said they’re making me cross the T’s and dot the I’s.”

Typically, retail stores are asked only for a “description of what they intend to offer,” said Dewey Crowe, Lexington’s deputy director of building inspections.

But “in this case, we want to know more specifics,” he said.

“If you were dealing with a Wal-Mart, you’re aware of what they sell — most everyone is aware of what they sell,” Crowe said.

So, before a certificate of occupancy is issued, Flynt has to provide Crowe’s office with details.

“Quite honestly, that’s to look and see what level of adult items they’re going to sell out there,” Crowe said. “That’s the issue out there — the potential sale of adult-oriented items — and that’s what we want to see, if they’re planning on selling those.”

That’s mostly because Flynt has managed to stir up some controversy, although that was not exactly his intention.

Last year he proposed a coffee shop with retail sales, but the plan was sidetracked when he revealed that it included an area for adult magazines, movies and novelties. The city’s board of adjustment denied-Flynt a conditional-use permit to open a store with an adult bookstore and adult video store.

Flynt’s attorneys filed a court appeal, and he hinted in January that he might open a juice bar with nude dancers.

In March, the Urban County Council voted unanimously for a zoning amendment that would prohibit adult bookstores, video stores, cabarets, and adult dancing and entertainment establishments at interstate interchanges.

After Flynt said he would open without the adult materials, neighbors and residents requested that he change the store’s “Hustler” name to something “more appropriate.”

He declared a name change impossible. “That’s like asking me to change my name or asking you to change yours,” he said.

Now, Flynt said, he’s eager to open the store at 2240 Elkhorn Road because he has about $3 million invested in a store that’s just sitting.

Flynt has stores in San Diego and Hollywood, Calif., and in Cincinnati and Monroe, Ohio.

The tentative plan, he said, is to open the Lexington store in July with a visit from his brother Larry, who is touring the country to promote his new book Sex, Lies & Politics: The Naked Truth.

For now, Flynt will dabble in snack cakes, coffee, Hustler apparel and other gifts, but his legal fight to house adult-oriented materials will continue.

As for what exactly is going to be in his store when it opens in July, Flynt would say only that “it’s going to be unique and different.”
