from www.online.wsj.com – CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — A former teacher could draw 45 days in jail for having sex with a 17-year-old student at a small-town school in western New York.

Marla Gurecki-Haskins resigned her job in September in pleading guilty to endangering the welfare of a child and official misconduct, both misdemeanors. She’s scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday morning.

Police maintained the 37-year-old had sexual contact with a 17-year-old boy, and she agreed with prosecutors that there was sufficient evidence to convict her.

Under the plea deal, she also agreed to resign as a special-education teacher at Canandaigua (kan-un-DAY’-gwuh) Academy and surrender her New York teacher’s certification. Her lawyer said she would not have to register as a sex offender.
