Colorado – from www.uccsscribe.com – How does one athlete go from being placed on such a high pedestal to losing all respect and support they had from their followers? One word: scandal. It sucks in even the pure and clean athletes who they are all but untouchable. The following lists ten of the most disgraceful scandals in sports history ranging from TV announcers to famous athletes and even a couple sports teams.

#10) Marv Albert
In 1997, the famous NBC announcer was accused of sexual assault and gained infamy during a trial filled with sordid details. Albert ultimately pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery for biting a former lover 18 times during a rendezvous-gone-wrong. Albert was immediately fired from his NBC job and resigned from New York City’s MSG Network. Albert’s career has largely been restored, though, since he is now the announcer of “NBA on TNT.”

#9) Eugene Robinson
A day before Super Bowl XXXIII in 1999, Atlanta Falcons’ free safety, Eugene Robinson, made headlines when he was arrested for soliciting a prostitute in Miami. Robinson was bailed out of jail the night before the big game by Atlanta Falcons G.M. Thomas Dimitroff. Ironically, Robinson was awarded the Bart Starr Award for “high moral character,” just a few nights prior.

#8) Saint John’s Basketball Team
In 2004, the Red Storm was already having a poor season. They had a dismal 5-14 record and not much got better on Feb. 4, 2004. After an embarrassing 71-51 loss to Pittsburgh, five players took a 38-year-old woman they had met in a strip club back to their hotel room. The next morning, the woman alleged that the players had raped her. One of the players, though, had recorded some of the proceedings on his digital camera. The woman was recorded saying that she would file for rape unless she was paid for sex and was then charged with prostitution counts. Three players were kicked off the team and two were suspended for the rest of the season.

#7) Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich
The two New York Yankee lefthanders left their teammates and the rest of America in disbelief when they showed up to spring training in 1973 announcing that they had swapped wives over the winter. Peterson and Kekich each traded their wives, two children, and dogs to each other.

#6) The Gold Club Trials
Although it isn’t exactly shocking to hear that athletes frequent strip clubs, it is another matter for the issue to be aired in open court. In 2001, this is exactly what happened during the racketeering trial of The Gold Club owner, Steve Kaplan. Among the athletes that took the stand were basketball star Patrick Ewing (who testified he had been “comped” sexual favors) and Atlanta Braves centerfielder, Andruw Jones (who was treated to a threesome at age 19). During the trial, one former stripper of The Gold Club was asked who was present at Ewing’s romps. She said, “The whole [expletive] NBA.”

#5) Minnesota Vikings “Love Boat” Scandal
In 2005, 17 key members of the Minnesota Vikings football team were allegedly involved in a “sex party” that occurred aboard a charter cruise on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota. Former Vikings cornerback Fred Smoot was the one who allegedly organized all of the activities for the party. The players were charged with disorderly conduct as well as lewd conduct but were never suspended and the charges were eventually minimized to a small fine and 48 hours community service.

#4) Kobe Bryant
In the summer of 2003, news reports came out that the Los Angeles Lakers superstar was arrested in connection with a sexual assault investigation made by the sheriff’s office in Eagle, Colo. The sexual assault complaint was filed by 19 year old Katelyn Faber, an employee of the nearby Lodge and Spa at Cordillera in Cordillera, Colo. Bryant was never charged with the rape that Faber accused him of but did admit to an “adulterous sexual encounter.” After the case, Bryant took a big hit in sponsorships and had to totally revamp his image back to where it was before the case. He is still married to his wife Vanessa.

#3) Ben Roethlisberger
Although the case was dropped before this year’s NFL season started, the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback was accused of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old college girl in a bathroom of a Georgia nightclub. The D.A. of Georgia could not find enough evidence to convict the quarterback, so the charges were dropped. Although Roethlisberger was off the hook legally, he was suspended for six games of the 2010 season and has a tarnished reputation around Pittsburgh that he hopefully can repair with a Super Bowl win against the Green Bay Packers.

#2) Brett Favre
Evidence is what really separates these last two scandals from the rest. The legendary quarterback, who so many looked up to throughout the Midwest, finally appeared human in 2010. News surfaced that back while playing for the New York Jets, Favre was harassing former Playboy model and Jets “sideline personality” Jenn Sterger. Favre allegedly called Sterger numerous times and sent inappropriate texts and pictures to Sterger throughout his tenure with the Jets. The case was dropped back in January but Favre was still fined $60,000 dollars for not cooperating with the NFL and the Sterger’s lawyers during the case.

#1) Tiger Woods
How could one man who was so famous for being a clean, reliable image fall so far? Well, no one will ever know how it all started, but everyone knows when it started: Thanksgiving night 2009. The day in which Tiger Woods’ so perfect, tidy little life got flipped upside down. Rumors, reports, voicemails, quotes, and all other evidence that one Tiger Woods had created a second life behind the squeaky clean golf legend we all knew. Tiger Woods had cheated on his wife, allegedly had numerous “encounters” with strippers and club girls alike, and never told a single person about it. That is maybe until Thanksgiving night 2009 when his ex-wife Elin found the text message or voicemail he had hidden from her for so long.
