Duke is a hallowed name in American culture. There was, of course, The Duke, John Wayne.

Multi-zillionaire, philanthropist and a woman who owns the record for the world’s oldest facelift at the age of 79, is the late Doris Duke. There’s the former Grand Wizard, percale bedsheet salesman and political candidate David Duke.

Among your list of dukes, how about including Duke Ellington or The Duke of Wellington? Okay it’s a stretch, but one of the NBA’s original black ballplayers was Walter Dukes of the New York Knicks, Minneapolis Lakers and Detroit Pistons.

In street lingo, “duke” is a zit. Our personal favorite? The Duke of Earl.

And then there’s Diane Duke who heads up the Free Speech Coalition, an organization that was originally founded by a man named Pinky.

To clarify: It was the late Ron Sullivan and the late Perry Ross who began the Adult Video Association in 1987, and then it was later Chief Pinky who started his own tribe, The Free Speech Legal Defense Fund which in turn became The Free Speech Coalition under the late Lenny Friedlander.

Whew, that was a mouthful, and, as you’ll note, there’s a lot of passed away people involved in this scenario.
