from www.wlsam.com – Chicago – A former Spanish teacher at a west suburban high school was ordered held on $150,000 bond Friday for allegedly having sex with one of her students on multiple occasions.
Angelica Rangel, 24, of Justice, a former teacher at Nazareth Academy in LaGarange Park, is charged with one count of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony, according to Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.
According to prosecutors, Rangel and the victim had sexual contact eight to 10 times between Oct. 22, 2010, and March 31, 2011. The incidents, which included “sexual penetration,” occurred at Rangel’s home in Justice and once in her car in North Riverside, according to court records.
Rangel allegedly admitted the encounters to police after her arrest in Justice, Simonton said, citing court records.
In addition, the victim’s cell phone contained photos of he and Rangel together at her home, and a photo of Rangel in a bath tub with her breasts partially exposed, prosecutors said in court.
On Friday, Judge Colleen McSweeney Moore set bond at $150,000 and ordered Rangel to have no contact with the victim, the victim’s family or anyone under age 18 is she is freed on bail, Simonton said. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 6 in Bridgeview.
Rangel worked for two years as a Spanish teacher at Nazareth Academy at 1209 W. Ogden, and the victim was in her Spanish class for two years, court records show. She has been fired by the school.
A statement from the school on Friday afternoon said the administration is “deeply saddened by recent events surrounding an inappropriate relationship between one of our students and a teacher. The teacher was immediately terminated after the administration learned of the situation.
“We will now focus our efforts as a management team to make sure that this never happens again and begin the process of helping our community with any healing that may need to take place,” the statement said.
Students leaving school on Friday said they’d heard the news during the day, and nobody saw it coming. One boy said people were shocked and saddened.
Students said a girl received a text from her mother about the incident, and word quickly spread, leading students to look up information online.
One girl who was in Rangel’s class for two years said such behavior was out of character from the way she acted in the classroom. A boy who currently in one of Rangel’s classes said she had been there Monday, but has not been seen since.
Teachers were having an emergency meeting after school regarding the incident, students said.
