NYU Study: How Porn Is Affecting Your Life

from www.nyulocal.com – Chyng Sun, a media studies professor in the McGhee Department of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, is currently conducting an international study on how pornography is affecting the lives of heterosexual young adults all over the world. Her past work on pornography includes a documentary titled The Price of Pleasure and a number of articles about violence in porn.

In studying pornography, Sun ultimately hopes to “understand porn consumption and how, in any way, it connects to sexual desire, behavior, and relationships.” She is particularly interested in deviant and violent genres of porn and their effects on young people. She hypothesizes that people who watch a lot of porn eventually develop sexual desires that resemble porn sex, most of which is unrealistic and oftentimes sexist, racist, and violent. Even people who don’t consume porn on a regular basis are affected because much of pornography has been mainstreamed and normalized. Hints of porn can be found in almost every form of visual media (music videos, advertising, fashion, etc.). The porn industry has ties with every hotel, every search engine, every internet/cable provider, credit card companies, publishing companies, radio stations, and banks.

Much of Sun’s research has been inspired by Gail Dines’ book Pornland: How Pornography Has Hijacked Our Sexuality. In her book, Dines argues that pornography has so permeated our society that it is permanently ruining male and female sexuality. While she supports pornography’s right to exist, she is highly critical of the ways in which pornography has seeped into our every day lives.

Males are usually first exposed to pornography between the ages of 11 and 13, when their sexuality is first developing. In many cases, boys who grow up on porn sex subconsciously begin to believe that porn sex is real sex. And it’s pretty disappointing when they realize that sex is not always instantaneously orgasmic for women, that sex is not always commitment free, and that women are not always eager to try everything and anything. Dines often finds that young men are becoming increasingly aware of how porn is negatively affecting their sex lives because real women are not the same as porn women.

Women watch out: pornography may have a subtle effect on your lives too, even if you don’t consume any. Because the men we are surrounded by are so influenced by the porn they watch, the things they learn from porn are translating into their sex lives, which in turn affect our sex lives. Young women often feel the need to participate in sexual acts that they may not always enjoy, such as ejaculation on the face or body, swallowing, and shaving or waxing of pubic hair.

All three of these acts were made more popular by pornography, and have now become almost normal. I have no doubt that some women are genuinely turned on by such behavior, regardless of pornography’s influence, but I’m willing to bet that most girls don’t really enjoy guys coming on their faces.

These findings are just a sample of the research conducted on pornography’s effects on men and women. Sun hopes to find out exactly how porn is changing and infiltrating the sex lives of young adults. She’s still unsure of how her results will turn out and will be continuing her research into the fall semester, so stay tuned. For now, Sun offers her best advice college students: “I think there needs to be a lot of honest conversations around porn.” Inspiration for an opening line at the next awkward party you attend? I think so.
