“Can a Woman Write a Porn Screenplay? You Bet”

If a woman can write out a check she’s very welcome at www.adultcybermart.com – contact geneross@adultfyi.com for details

Ginger Murray writes on www.sfweekly.com – Cat Woman strokes her latex covered ass.

In response, Batman says to Robin, “She may be evil, but she is quite attractive.”

Was this an episode you missed? Nope. This is a scene from Batman XXX: A Porn Parody, one of the winning films at the Adult Video News Adult Film Awards this year. Other nominees included This Ain’t Glee, MASH XXX, and The Devil Wears Nada. The awards were held in January in Las Vegas. But thanks to cable, I was able to watch them last week. The awards show is worth watching just for the comments, “He was fucking me and feeding me. It was so romantic,” said actress Jessie Andrews to a portly and ponytailed Ron Jeremy. Amusing, yes, and also inspiring.

Yours truly has been been asked to write the script for Malia Shlaefer’s next erotic film. Shlaefer, director, photographer, and adult film actress, will again enter a film in the Good Vibrations Indie Erotic Film Festival. Last year, her film Outlaw, featuring the antics of a maverick dildo, came in second. If there had been just one more audience screamer supporting Shlaefer and co-director Lex Sloan’s efforts, they would have won.

She plans a triumphant return, and I am honored to be a part of it. Though I am a writer, this job presents a very new kind of challenge. What is involved in writing the script for an erotic film? Isn’t an erotic film considered good only in direct relation to how good the sex scenes are? Apparently not, if Batman XXX is any indication. Porn fans and the moviegoers who attend the Good Vibes IXFF do enjoy, and at times expect, cleverness and style in their erotic film scripts.

Writing an erotic film can be difficult for a writer and it can be even more difficult for a feminist. Or so one might think. How do I write a film that is hot but also reflects my investment in promoting women’s expression, power and freedom? Most porn is not made for women, and most of the industry is run by men. But porn and feminism doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive.

The first porn film to get my attention was Emmanuelle. Based on the 1959 novella of the same name by Emmanuelle Arsan, the movie features the sexy adventures of a bored diplomat’s wife. Directed by Just Jaeckin and starring Sylvia Kristel the 1974 film and the series that followed helped to revitalize the flagging French film industry.

It was designed to appeal to women who, at that time in Paris, were pretty much the only ones going to see films. And women loved Emmanuelle. So much so that Columbia Pictures agreed to distribute it in the United States because of this. The studio reasoned that popular female interest meant Emmanuelle could not be regarded as mere pornography. The film was also artistic. Later films in the series would include a pornographic retelling of the Greek myth Pygmalion and an erotic experience with a Tibetan monk.

The Emanuelle series had a lot going for it: intelligence, artistry, and hot, hot sex. What’s not to love? A new local porn production company Pink & White also uses humor and style to tell a sexy story while also being politically aware. Pink & White films are absolutely made for women. They are also made by women. Star actress and queer activist Jiz Lee is stunning in the Crash Pad series exploring the steamy exploits of boxing chicks.

And if Malia Schlaefer and I are very lucky, she will be the star of the erotic film we are making, on that will honor that first film I loved. The 2011 IXFF is scheduled for Sept. 22 at the Castro Theater. I hope to be there. But before then, the film has to be made. Inspired by the AVN awards I am thinking that an erotic parody will be just the thing. Here are some ideas, let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions.

Malia Schlaefer also works for the Femina Potens gallery, which will feature her Fantasy photographic art series on July 11. Gallery director Madison Young had her film, Madison Young’s Bondage Boob Tube, nominated for an AVN award.
