from www.wptv.com – Tom Nieves thought the craigslist ad was harmless. He remembers it offering a TV set for $750, claiming something like, “My wife says I have too many toys.”

He thought he’d come across a good deal.
“Times are hard and we were trying to save some money,” Nieves said.

But the good deal turned bad, fast.

According to Nieves, he showed up at a house in Brandon to see the TV, when two men threw him to the ground and robbed him of $650. They ran off.

“You’re asking yourself, ‘God, why are you allowing this to happen to me?'” Nieves said.

Detectives claim the scam didn’t end with the violent theft.

Nieves says he got a phone call from a woman a week later, claiming she found his belongings in the woods.

“She had my wallet, all my IDs, my bank statements, my social security card. Everything,” Nieves said. “She said, ‘What’s it worth to you?'”

A sheriff’s report claims Angie Baxley demanded up to $5,000 for his stuff, telling him she works as a stripper and would give him lap dances as well.

“These scams are always out there, and obviously this one could’ve turned very deadly,” Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Spokesman Larry McKinnon said.

“We feel strongly that she’s connected to these two individuals.”

McKinnon hopes Baxley’s alleged extortion scam serves as a warning to shoppers and buyers when it comes to sites like craigslist.

“Because you never know what you’re going to walk into,” McKinnon said.

Detectives set up a controlled meeting with Baxley, where they report she exchanged Nieves’s property for money.

They arrested her on charges of extortion, grand theft, and dealing in stolen property.

Baxley’s arrest brings Nieves some peace, but the two men are still on the run.

He has a hard time trusting anyone, and says he’ll never shop on craigslist again.

“Never. I don’t recommend it for anyone, either,” he said.
