from www2.tbo.com – A former high school teacher in Pasco County who resigned under pressure nearly a month ago has been arrested on an allegation that she had sex with a 15-year-old male student.
Maryann Verdi, 40, of 18809 Sugarberry Lane, Shady Hills, was arrested Wednesday on charges of lewd or lascivious battery and unlawful sexual activity with a minor, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
The teen told an investigator that he had a sexual encounter with Verdi in December 2009, when he was 15 and Verdi was 38, an arrest report states. Verdi was a teacher at River Ridge High School in New Port Richey at the time.
He and Verdi had a second encounter in Verdi’s vehicle on Oct. 3, an arrest report states, the day she submitted her resignation as a teacher at Sunlake High in Land O’ Lakes where she was in trouble regarding issues unrelated to the sex charges.
Verdi was in the Land O’ Lakes Jail on Thurs-day with bail set at $20,000.
Verdi’s resignation from Sunlake High came after Superintendent Heather Fiorentino began termination proceedings against her. Verdi had been accused of using inappropriate language around students and using profanities in reference to fellow employees.
Students in her classes also complained that she spent instructional time talking about alcohol, drugs and her experiences in jail, Fiorentino wrote in a letter informing Verdi that she planned to recommend the school board fire her.
The school board suspended Verdi without pay Sept. 13, a move that usually precedes termination.
That wasn’t the first time Verdi had been suspended.
In March 2010, she was arrested on charges of domestic battery, battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer. The school board suspended her from her job at River Ridge High for more than a year.
In June, she was allowed to return to the school district, this time as a teacher at Sunlake High, after she completed a pre-trial intervention program that led to the criminal charges being dismissed.
