You should never send a boy or a woman to do a man’s job – evidence being the fact that the LA Times had film critic Betsey Sharkey review The Rum Diary when it came out last week. Judging from what she has to say, Sharkey didn’t like the movie.
That’s because The Rum Diary starring Johnny Depp, as Hunter S. Thompson’s alter ego, itinerant journalist Paul Kemp, is a guy-picture, plain and simple.
[Bear in mind, too, that Depp is on a dramatic short leash compared to the whacked out Thompson persona he displays in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.]
Before all the lunacy took grip of his senses, Thompson wrote The Rum Diary, and he had yet to become a household name. That is, if drugs and booze constitute your idea of living room furniture.
